This Is The Best Snack For Your Money, And Here’s Why

Reusing Yogurt Jars

Iโ€™ve mentioned this in a few different blog posts at this point, but itโ€™s still true: I tend to get a bit obsessive about food. My most recent food obsession is a particular brand of yogurt called Oui by Yoplait. Itโ€™s a French-style yogurt that comes in individual glass jars. And to be honest with you, I might be just as obsessed with the jars as I am with the yogurt that comes in them!

Since Iโ€™ve been eating a lot of this yogurt lately, Iโ€™ve been coming up with ways to repurpose all of the adorable yogurt jars I have refused to throw out. And I have so many ideas at this point that I canโ€™t help but share them with you here! :-)

But before we get to that, letโ€™s quickly explore why this yogurt is packaged and sold in glass jars in the first place!

Reusing Yogurt Jars

A Brief Introduction To French-Style Yogurt

The main difference between traditional French-style yogurts (like Oui) and other styles of yogurt is that it is โ€œpot set.โ€ This simply means that the yogurt is cultured and sold in the same container, usually in an individual portion.

Using glass containers for pot set yogurt is a very practical choice, because glass stands up well to heat and is easy to sanitize. And Iโ€™m certainly not complaining either, because there are so many wonderful ways to reuse these cute little jars! :-)

Reusing Yogurt Jars

Put A Lid On It!

In the next section of this post, youโ€™ll find a list of creative and practical ways to reuse Oui yogurt jars. Some of the uses donโ€™t require any special equipment or alterationโ€”simply wash the jars and go nuts!

Other ideas require you to fit a lid on the jar, but I have good news on that front! There are plenty great lids that fit Oui jars perfectly that are readily available online! Here are just a few:

  • Yoplait Lids – Yoplait offers both blue and clear lids for Oui jars, available for purchase on their website.
  • Wood Lids – These wood lids are designed for small Weck jars, but they fit perfectly on Oui jars too. They have a rubber gasket that forms an airtight seal.
  • Bamboo Lids – These Bamboo Wood Lids are designed to fit Oui jars and they have silicone sealing rings for a tight seal. They also have a darling sunflower design and they’re eco-friendly!
  • Cork Lids – For fans of apothecary jars, try these stylish cork lids for your Oui jars!
  • Silicone Lids – If you want a simple lid that fits well and is easy to clean, look no further than these pretty blue silicone lids from Amazon!
  • More Silicone Lids – These simple stretch lids come in packs of ten and will also fit your mason jars, so they’re very economical.
  • Hydroponic Garden Lids – These plastic ring adapter lids let you use net cups to grow small plants hydroponically! Each includes the ring, net cup, and growing medium. Perfect for herbs on your windowsill!

Okay, now letโ€™s get to the good stuff! :-) Without further ado, here are 13 creative ways to reuse Oui glass yogurt jars.

13 Brilliant Uses For Oui Yogurt Jars

Reusing Yogurt Jars

1. Candle Votive

Use a yogurt jar as a candle votive. Just put a tea light inside (either the standard kind or battery-powered) and light it up. It you want to add a little something extra to your votive, pour a bit of colored sand into the bottom before adding your light.

2. Odds & Ends

Use a yogurt jar to corral collections of small items, like spare change, office supplies, craft supplies, and more.

3. Spices

Fill a couple of these yogurt jars with your most frequently used spices. For instance, I go through a lot of Italian seasoning, so I filled a jar with it and popped a cork lid on top. Itโ€™s always handy when I need it, and it looks great on my countertop too!

4. Gift Jar

Need a quick and easy birthday gift idea? Fill one of these jars with small gifts like candy, money, accessories, etc. Cover the top of the jar with some cute tissue paper and secure it with a bit of string. So easy, and it looks great!

5. Succulent Pot

Generally speaking, most succulents do best in containers that have drainage holes. But if you fill the bottom of one of these jars with gravel first, you can absolutely use it as a pot for a small succulent! Be sure to use a cactus soil blend, which is drier than regular potting soil, and water your succulent infrequently for best results.

6. Bath Salts

Use a yogurt jar to store or gift your favorite homemade bath salt! (Donโ€™t have a favorite homemade bath salt? Check out some of mine at the link below.)

9. DIY โ€œSea Glassโ€

Love the greenish tinge of sea glass? You can transform your yogurt jar into a DIY sea glass container! I used this sea glass spray paint to coat the inside of the jar, then set it upside down on some paper to dry. How easy is that?

10. Air Freshener

Use a few yogurt jars to make your own gel air fresheners! Get the full instructions for making gel air fresheners by reading my blog post about them below.

These jars are the perfect size for snacks. Just fill one up with nuts, cereal, granola, candies, or trail mix, then pop a lid on the top and toss it in your bag for later! (As to whether you offer the snacks to your kids or keep them for yourselfโ€ฆ thatโ€™s for you to decide.) ;-)

Have some little spring blossoms coming up in your yard or garden? Use a yogurt jar as a mini vase to display them in your home! Thereโ€™s nothing like a vase of fresh flowers in the springtime, no matter the size!

  7. The yogurt in Europe is so much better than anything we have here and was so glad when this first came out. I have saved all my little jars too. They are great for anything in the sewing department, like buttons, little patches, pins, thimbles and such. If it fits in the jar you have a holder. I also like it for the spices. I have also made mini parfaits and (other desserts too) in them for dinners. They are great for just about anything you can imagine, but the best part is the yogurt! Thank you and the readers for some good suggestions.

  9. I use the Oui jars to save my bacon grease in the fridge for cooking- the glass lets you pour it in hot/warm and I just allow it to cool on the counter and then put in the fridge to chill & solidify. I take a scoop out for adding to green beans or whatever as needed.

  12. For my son’s wedding I made votive candles from the Oui yogurt jars. In place of sand I used sugar that I tinted with food coloring. It was a lot cheaper than sand. I then tied matching colored ribbon and made a bow around the lip of the jar. If you have enough notice about the wedding date, or any event, the votive candles can be bought for a lot less the day after Christmas. In this area, none of the venues allow real candles to be used any more.

  14. I havenโ€™t bought any of the Oui brand for awhile. I do love their new French Country decorative jars. They are so cute. Iโ€™ll have to look and see if they are still being sold. The jars are limited edition

  15. You are not kidding about this yogurt!!! I’m not a big yogurt eater but I wanted the jar for Q- tips. I bought one thinking my son would eat it. He didn’t eat it so I was sharing it with my 10 month old dc baby. It is the BEST yogurt I’ve ever eaten!! Then I washed the jar and both labels came off immediately in one piece each!!! This is the best hint!!!

  16. A few years ago I saw an idea (probably on Pinterest) for using small containers for holding individual servings of veggies and dip. These little guys would be perfect! Spoon in a generous serving of dip, then arrange a variety of veggie sticks right in the same jar. Cut the sticks thin enough to make for easy eating, and tall enough to look attractive standing tall out of the jar. Very cute clustered on a table or on a pass-around tray!

  17. My Oui jars are from when it first came out and seem to have a label that is painted on? Is there any way to get that off?

    • Interesting – I haven’t come across that jar type. Are you able to scrape it off at all? If so, I would soak the jars in hot water for a few minutes, and then apply a layer of peanut butter. The oil in peanut butter usually helps to dissolve the adhesive. Best of luck!

      • And here I was, thinking I was all alone with a secret obsession for Oui containers! BTW, have you seen the little half-size ones with the limited edition chocolate creme in them? So adorable! In the kitchen, I use Oui containers as my drinking glasses, to warm or melt butter, chocolate, peanut butter, as handy upright storage for my measuring spoons, chopsticks and skewers, condiment packets, etc. In the bathroom, I have one holding my toothbrush and toothpaste, one as my water glass, and several others on the countertop, in the medicine cabinet, AND in the drawers to store tweezers, cotton swabs, hair accessories, small tubes of stuff, bandaids, etc. etc. etc…
To remove painted-on labels, wipe with a cloth or paper towel dipped in isopropyl alcohol from the drug store (get the 91 percent or higher strength). It will also usually remove any glue, adhesive, or sticky residue remaining on both glass and plastic containers (just donโ€™t let plastic soak in it – it could damage it). Thereโ€™s also an excellent solvent-type product called Goof Off thatโ€™ll remove just about anything that you DONโ€™T want from anything that you DO.
Thanks so much for providing sources of lids for these little beauties – now Iโ€™ll be able to do even MORE with them!

      • Thanks for the great tips, Lee Anne!

    • The labels are textured and look painted, but they are plastic and peel off easily. Clean the residue like Lee Anne suggests below. I tried 91% alcohol on one jar, but it wasn’t working all that well. I ended up using Goo Gone.

  20. Hi EliMarie – those lids will not fit the Oui jar, unfortunately. The Oui jars have the same opening as small weck jars, so you can search lids for those. :-)

  22. I had to laugh when I read this article. I initially bought Oui yogurt just for the jar! So glad I am not the only one who loves them. The yogurt is really good and I love it, but the jars are the main attraction. The labels come off fairly easily. I haven’t come up with any clever ways to use them but I do use the jars when cooking, to hold small amounts of something. I have to wash, dry and put them away quickly to avoid my DH from asking why we need to keep the jars. He just doesn’t understand.

    • Iโ€™ve had to stash mine too as my husband doesnโ€™t understand why we need them and throws them away.

  23. I decorated them with Washi tape. Then I put 3 decorated tea-lite candles, and one decorated matchbox inside for a cute little church fair sale item!

  24. Are You Kidding Meeee?!?!?!?!?!?!
Where was this post 2 years ago when I got my first jars? (2 Dozen from my food bank)

No joke…..All this time I have been Sure that there had been some Super-Secret, New, Scientific, procedure invented to molecularly bond the ‘labels’ to the jars. I did not know, until this very hour, that those were Removable!

I have a Dozen jars of Oui yogurt at the back of my bottom shelf in the refrigerator, with a Nov. 2017 expiration date on them because I did not want to #1 waste the yogurt inside, and #2 add the jars to the PILE of them that I have on my craft room table!

And then, I read this article, AND the comments! THANK YOU !

I can say, from having Just completed the process, that This will remove the labels and the adhesive.

Fill the jars with HOT water and let them sit for a few mins to warm the glass. Peel off the label (Who Knew?). Then dab one dot of Blue Dawn liquid on the adhesive and smear it all over the sticky. Now, use a ‘Magic Eraser Sponge’ to rub off the residue. Rinse clean.

There you go…..Slick as a whistle! I just did 2 jars, with 4 labels.

    I Love this Community!

Thank you all! And Thank You, Jillee!

  25. I love the Oui yogurts as well as the cute little jars it comes in. I have a candle business and I try to reuse containers I find in thrift shops, yard sales or my own recycling bin. These jars make such cute little candles.

  26. These lids are the best things Iโ€™ve seen this week! I love the glass jars but stopped buying Oui because I felt so wasteful throwing these cute jars away! I just purchased some of the clear lids so definitely love this!! Thank you!

  27. The plastic Mason jar lids will not work. The yogurt jars do not have threads for the cap to screw on and the jar opening is a bit smaller.

  28. I found Oui yogurt about 2 years ago. Theyโ€™re my favorite, particularly the lemon So delicious!

  30. Thank you, Jillee. This came at the perfect time. I purchased Oui yogurt the day before. Like you, I couldnโ€™t throw out the jar. It was just too darn cute. Now I can purchase various lids plus I have several ideas on how to reuse them. Yay!

  31. I found that small mason jar lids fit Oui jars perfectly. I use them to portion freshly ground coffee for a few dayโ€™s worth and stack them (2 to 3 jars) near my coffee pot.

Iโ€™m planning my daughterโ€™s summer wedding & offered my Oui collection of โ€œstemless wine glassesโ€ for the reception . I have at least 5 dozen! She laughed at that, but is taking me up on 6 dozen pint mason jars for the BYOB bar.

Another way Iโ€™m using the jars is to root clippings.

The labels on these jars are particularly difficult to remove. Iโ€™ve found itโ€™s easier to remove them before washing.

  33. I’ve discovered that plastic lids for small cat food cans (Fancy Feast size) also fit these jars. I found them at Petco.

    • Cost at PetSmart was cheaper than Amazon, affordable on a tight budget. They will be tight, however, so you might want to put them in hot water first then on the jar the first time you use the new lid.

  36. How do you remove the glue they use to attach the foil? It’s really stubborn! So far I’ve been scraping it off with a knife and using some lemon oil to get the residue. Any other ideas?
Love all these ideas for reusing the jars! I use them to hold colored markers. They look pretty and you can easily find the color you want.

    • Goof Off works well, among many other things.

    • The labels peel off easier if the jar is a little warm, try right after you rinse it out with warm water. After that, I use either goof off or wd-40 for the leftover adhesive, then Windex to remove the greasiness. (Then run through the dishwasher before using.) If you’re painting them, you might want to use rubbing alcohol to ensure the oils are all gone.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • After peeling off the label, apply a thin coat of peanut butter to the remaining adhesive. After an hour or two, it will scrub off easily!

    • Easy, peasy method: expose to sunlight. It breaks down the copolymer thermoplastic glue. Strong direct sun (not through a window), a full day, or two. Even in low humidity this will photochemically and thermally weaken the glue and its bond to the glass. If you have high humidity or rain meanwhile or after, the glue swells and peels right off, as in, will just slip right off if you give it enough time. You can also soak them in a little water and/or vinegar post exposure if you don’t get rain or have ambient moisture. If you don’t give it enough time, the glue will still come off much easier than before, but it will chip and peel right off with a red or blue or green scrubby. If you give it enough time, it just floats off with light pressure.

  38. Good ideas. I actually saved some of the glasses to use for votives. I did the cute little idea for the holidays where the glasses look like they have snow around. Where I work we have a huge bin in our parking lot for recycling the glass containers.

    • Join the discussion… Christym, I did the same thing. I collect the jars and decorate them with a bit of narrow ribbon just under the lip of the jar, and tiny pinecones then add a candle to give as little gifts around the Christmas and holiday season. I will try the snow – thought about it but never did it. Thanks, Jillee, for this post. As always, helpful and creative!

  40. I have been keeping all of my jars as well for months now. We use the larger ones as juice glasses and I use the smaller ones for crafting – water for paintbrushes, putting paint on the rim to make circles, using as weights for corners of curled papers… so much! They are just so cute :-). But – also have to say that the Salted Caramel yogurt is the one flavor that I buy *just* because of the taste – the others are taste AND the cute jar! Iโ€™d buy the caramel one in any container ;-)

  19. The link is okay – it is actually a lid for a weck jar, but it fits Oui jars too :-)

  20. Hi EliMarie – those lids will not fit the Oui jar, unfortunately. The Oui jars have the same opening as small weck jars, so you can search lids for those. :-)

  21. OK so I did horribly in French class…how do you pronounce โ€œOuiโ€?

    • Coconut oil on the sticky portion left a few hours or overnight and it will easily wash off no scrubbing. Blessings!

  32. I have so many of these jars I gave a bunch to a friend that makes homemade yogurt, I use them to keep lip glosses in, and have used on charcuterie tray for items like dips.

  37. Jillee, love all that you do/have. We make ho-made yogurt. Love the yogurt for stews etc too.

  39. I love those jars too.I have bought that yogurt a couple of times..didn’t save the jars but thought about it..I think I’ll start using them..they’re too pretty to recycle.
